Civilian Party Playing Surely Playing Practical Joke
10 June 2014
The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union is disappointed that the Civilian Party is defending the $33,635 grant from the
Electoral Commission for election programme broadcasting. Executive Director of the Taxpayers’ Union, Jordan Williams,
says:
“For the Civilian party to accept $33,000 to promote its policies of free ice cream and a llama for each child in
poverty, is outrageous. This is an affront to very important issues like health and education. It is absurd that while
people wait for surgery, the Civilian Party receives $33,000 of taxpayer money for what is essentially a hobby horse."
"If the Electoral Commission is prepared to give money to the Civilian Party, then perhaps we should be looking at
whether this state funded political campaigning should exist at all."
“We think the Civilian Party do a great job of pointing out the daily absurdities of politics but we are stunned that
they are happy to accept taxpayers' money. We ask them to do the honourable thing and turn down the cash.”
The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union is a non-partisan activist group, dedicated to being the voice for Kiwi taxpayers in
the corridors of power. It’s here to fight government waste and make sure New Zealanders get value for money from their
tax dollar.
