Labour’s Tuck Shop rules a good start - Sir Peter Gluckman
Sir Peter Gluckman told TVNZ’s Q+A programme that it would have been good to have left tuck shop rules in place but the
issue is multi-dimensional.
“That is an important point and I think it would have been good to have left those tuck shop rules in place. But that’s
not the point. The point of the issues is much more complicated, it's multidimensional, multisectorial, there is no
magic bullet.”
Sir Peter Gluckman says you can’t have individual responsibility without knowledge.
“I think one of the things that is clear is that there is a science around obesity which is now clear that the pathway
to obesity starts before a baby's even conceived, and as you go through pregnancy and infancy things happen which make
you more or less likely to be obese in this world of processed food and sugar and fats and everything else.”
“We live in a world where what we eat is now very different to our biology”
Sir Peter Gluckman says the private sector has to be part of the solution.
“Part of the solution is obviously around what's marketed to children, what's sold to children, what food's involved.
Now part of that I think can be by negotiation with the private sector, part of it may have to be regulatory.”
