Taxpayer Funded Groups Need More Transparency
The Taxpayers' Union backs New Zealand First leader Winston Peters in his call for an inquiry into South Auckland Social Services Trust, Te Roopu Taurima O Manukau. Jordan Williams, Executive Director of the Taxpayers’ Union, says:
"It is always concerning to hear reports of alleged financial irregularities when taxpayers' money is at stake. The serious allegations must be looked into without delay."
“Unlike government agencies, these non-profit groups are not required to comply with the Official Information Act. This means that too often taxpayer money disappears into a void."
"The public need assurance that money is not being wasted or misspent."
“We call on the Government to commit to reform of the Official Information Act so that it covers these sorts of groups."
