Youth competition draws attention to child poverty solutions

A nationwide schools competition on solutions to child poverty was launched today by the Anglican Church in
Christchurch.
The Big Picture Competition invites young people to convey their thoughts on solutions to child poverty and consider ways to make their communities
better.
“Participants must create a big picture showing what kids in their neighbourhood need to be healthy and free from
poverty,” competition co-ordinator Kate Day said.
“The Big Picture Competition is a chance for students to learn about child poverty and develop citizenship skills.
“By creating a big picture, participants will share their opinions about what helps kids in their neighbourhood thrive.
“Child poverty is on the hearts of many New Zealanders, it is important that young people can learn about solutions and
have their voices heard,” Ms Day said.
Child Poverty Action Group and Unicef NZ support the competition being run by Anglican Social Justice. Teaching
resources are provided to help teachers approach the competition within a variety of subjects.
Entries will be publicly exhibited. There are more than $5000 in prizes for the winning schools.
