Election to be referendum on pension age –Whyte
“Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey’s announcement that the Pension Age will rise to 70 shows how isolated New Zealand’s position is becoming," says ACT Leader Jamie Whyte.
“When the pension age was raised to 65 from 60, people turning 65 expected to live a further 12 years. Today that figure is 16 years.
“Projections by the Treasury show that if we do nothing, pension costs will double and government debt will increase to 200 per cent of GDP, a level that would scare even the Greeks.
“Centre right voters concerned about fiscal sustainability are left with a conundrum. The Labour and Green parties are promising to raise the age, but it is almost their only sensible policy.
“A vote for ACT is vote to keep stable centre right government and send a message that we need to think about our long term fiscal future, and that must include the pension age."
