Ban Synthetics NZ are extremely pleased with the announcement and the complete turn around by Associate Health Minister
Peter Dunne to blanket ban synthetic psycho actives in NZ within two weeks. “Whilst this is definitely a step in the
right direction says Ban Synthetics Chairperson, Stephanie Harawira - it was the only sensible direction it could have
gone. It is Ban Synthetics NZ's stance that these compounds are as the packets suggest 'Not Fit For Human Consumption'
and should never be allowed onto the high streets of our country not, now or in the near future.
What is extremely disappointing is Peter Dunne has danced around this issue for the last 18 months and in this wake, our
communities have had to bear the brunt of his poor decision making” states Stephanie Harawira. “Sadly, now parents,
communities and health professionals are faced with a potentially larger crisis ahead. We now have vulnerable members of
our community going through extreme withdrawals, including violent outbursts and psychosis”. The next obvious step is to
look at how our community and health sectors respond to this. These services will need to be resourced and well
coordinated to ensure people are able to get the help they need says Mrs Harawira.
"Ban Synthetics NZ's a Nationwide movement with over 24 communities who nationally came together on the 5th April to
stand up and state that we were not prepared to ignore this issue.
We have heard from politicians, mayors, local board members, health and social professional, and families who have had
enough. According to Mrs Harawira, this shows you that collectively we can bring about change, whether it was through
community action, rally’s, protesting outside these shops, or strategically lobbying our MP’s.
However, while this is just a small victory for now – the bigger victory lies with helping addicts overcome their
addiction says Mrs Harawira. Any Legislation introduced into our country should always be viewed on the direct impact it
will have on the health, safety and well-being of our communities.
