Government Buildings Should Strive for Value for Money, Not Subsidise a Pet Industry
target="_blank">Calls by the timber industry for the Government to use wood as the primary material in new government buildings of up to four stories should be
rejected, says the Taxpayers’ Union. Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
“Taxpayers want value for money, not government buildings designed to subsidise saw mills.”
“The signals from Labour's forestry spokesperson Shane Jones are disappointing. Wooden buildings make sense if the
economic and environmental benefits stack up. But a policy of ‘wood-first’ just means that taxpayers pay more to
subsidise a pet industry. It is economic foolishness and a sop to the timber industry.”
