Three strikes - a Public Safety Measure.
07/03/2014
The three strikes law has been criticised by a Wanganui defence lawyer
Stephen Ross a Wanganui defence lawyer says that the three strikes law had ‘no impact whatsoever’ on criminal offending.
“This lawyer has got the wrong end of the stick completely,” says Gil Elliott spokesperson for the Sensible Sentencing Trust.
“Unfortunately though he is quite correct,” Elliott says. “As we know ‘corrections facilities’ (real name - prisons), do not ‘correct’ prisoner behaviour. So three strikes won’t
do that either.”
The ‘three stikes’ was, however, intended to to put recidivist offenders behind bars to protect the public.
“Three strikes is a PUBLIC SAFETY MEASURE purely and simply but only, unfortunately, after the third criminal offence!” Elliott concludes.
