Call for new law to allow recall of Mayor
Speaking at the Stand Down Len Brown protest in Auckland today, David Thornton, founder of the NoMoreRates campaign,
called for new legislation to allow citizens to call for a vote to remove elected Mayors from office.
David Thornton told the crown,
“If we are going to continue along the SuperCity road we need to have the means of dealing with another Len Brown
situation when it inevitably arises somewhere in New Zealand,
We want the ‘power to recall’ – where the people are given the power to vote to remove a Mayor from office.
I put this proposal to a Select Committee 4 years ago when it was considering Local Government changes.
The view of the committee then, was that such a measure was unlikely to be needed.
I am now going back to Parliament to put the case again.
We the people need to have the ability to remove a mayor from office.
Len Brown is the prime example for that need.
If Len Brown won’t stand down, we, the people, need a law that will take him down”
