New Film SHELTER Takes on Domestic Violence
“One in every three women worldwide has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime. Most often, the abuser is a member of her own family.”
Last year’s ‘1 Billion Rising’ event sparked this short film about domestic violence by musician-activist Natalie Merchant. It premieres today, February 14th.
Using a blend of music and message, SHELTER focuses on the issue in our backyard in the Hudson Valley and features the words and experiences of advocates, criminal prosecutors, victims and survivors. It is an effort to shine a light on what is a sizable public health epidemic here … and everywhere.
Watch it here.
SHELTER was filmed on June 2, 2013 at The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. All proceeds generated by the concert were donated to domestic violence shelters Grace Smith House, Poughkeepsie, NY and The Washbourne House, Kingston, NY.
