The Fertiliser Association of New Zealand applauds the Government’s Commitment to Freshwater Reform
The Fertiliser Association of New Zealand (the Association) has released its submission to the Ministry for the
Environment on the proposed amendments to the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2011.
“The Fertiliser Association supports environmentally responsible, scientifically-based nutrient management and we
applaud the government’s commitment to a nationally consistent approach that allows regional councils to manage water
quality in an integrated and sustainable way,” said Dr Philip Mladenov, Chief Executive of the Fertiliser Association of
New Zealand.
“The government has gone a long way toward correctly identifying the problems currently associated with implementing the
National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management and providing an approach to the monitoring of progress towards
freshwater objectives.”
“The fertiliser industry has a unique position in discussions about water management because it is influential right
across the agricultural sector. The Association’s member companies supply products that are essential to nearly all New
Zealand farming systems. We also provide research, decision support tools and training and certification programmes that
support both environmentally sustainable farming practices and the government’s export growth agenda.”
“The Association looks forward to a complete package of legislative reforms and amendments to the National Policy
Statement, as well as to further guidance on cost benefit analysis and collaborative processes that will lend clarity to
this important endeavour.”
