Labour’s Baby Bonus a Bribe for the Middle Class Vote
27 January 2014
Reacting to this afternoon’s announcement by the Labour Party leader, David Shearer, that Labour will pay $60 a week to all families with newborns, who earn a total annual income of up to $150,000, Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
“We’re all for helping families, but despite the rhetoric about poverty, this policy doesn’t focus at those most in need. The policy is middle-class welfare designed to grow votes. Only a fraction of the money goes to those Mr Cunliffe claims it helps most.”
The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union is a non-partisan activist group, dedicated to being the voice for Kiwi taxpayers in the corridors of power. It’s here to fight government waste and make sure New Zealanders get value for money from their tax dollar.
