“New Bail law WILL save lives”
Sensible Sentencing and the Christies Law Campaign Team is commending the Government for passing the Bail Amendment Bill today. The bill passed its third reading this morning.
“It’s been a long road of tireless work but the SST and Christies Law Team would like to thank and congratulate Judith Collins and the Government for finally passing the Bail Amendment Bill. We have no doubt that it strengthens the Bail Act, will save lives and assist in ensuring public safety, which of course should be the primary consideration.
“While effective at the margins, we are disappointed that the Government chose not to implement the common sense recommendation by many public submitters that crimes committed on bail should be sentenced cumulatively (i.e. in addition to the sentence for the original offences charged). We believe this recommendation remains a key missed opportunity and hope the Government is prepared to readdress this issue in the near future” says Ruth Money, Sensible Sentencing Spokesperson.
“The challenge is now for Judges to act upon these refinements to the Bail Act in order to prevent similar tragedies and learn from our recent past.”
