Will Key Experience Cameron’s Woes?
“Results just in from Local Body Elections in the UK have seen support collapse for David Cameron and his party. The
traditional centre-right vote is now shared with the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) which gained over a
quarter of total votes.”
“This is evidence of a changing political balance,” says Colin Craig.
“We’ve seen the emergence of the Tea Party in the United States, and now the success of the UKIP in the UK. Essentially
we are seeing a divide of the incumbent centre-right parties as they lose touch with their conservative voter base,” he
says.
“There is a theme emerging, where governments are ignoring the traditional conservative voter base. This is particularly
evident where referenda are ignored, marriage is redefined, and the international agenda is promoted above national
sovereignty. Voters are now pushing back,” says Mr Craig.
“UKIP, which achieved around 3% in the last national elections (a result similar to the Conservative Party result here)
have now managed to capture over a quarter of the local election vote.”
“This bodes well for the Conservative Party of New Zealand. Although we are not officially affiliated with UKIP, we have
many similarities. We are seeing that the issues that resonate with voters in the UK are resonating with voters in New
Zealand.”
“The Conservative Party is currently the country’s fastest growing party for good reason. Everyday New Zealanders are
now having conversations that could ultimately see Key experience Cameron’s woes.”
