Say No To Asset Sales: A Political Rally With A Difference.
Rally begins after work, 6pm. Speakers in the following order:
Peter Love, Board Member, Wellington Tenths Trust, accompanied by grand-daughter Kaira Love
Celia Wade-Brown, Mayor of Wellington
Dr Ganesh Nana, Chief Economist, BERL
Dr Geoff Bertram, Senior Economics Lecturer, VUW
Nathan Argent, Chief Policy Advisor, Greenpeace NZ
Dr Jane Kelsey, Professor of Law, Auckland University
Frances Kuo, Aotearoa Is Not For Sale Welllington
John Maynard & Steve Booth, People's Power Ohariu
Justin Duckworth, Bishop of Wellington
Roy Reid, National President, Grey Power NZ
Maanu Paul, Chairman, New Zealand Maori Council
There'll be music breaks through the rally. Performers: Lucky Ngatuere, Maarama Te Kira, Skank Jigger, Warren Pomana, and after the close of speakers we'll be hearing a set from Porirua 8-piece Tribal Rizing.
"Say No To Asset Sales is a political rally with a slight difference: the lineup doesn't include any Members of Parliament. With opposition to the proposed sales cutting right across party loyalties, it's just a fact that a number of the speakers - each of whom holds strong views on this issue - simply wouldn't be able to express those views publicly if the event were organised by one or other of the political parties.
The lineup is proof that there are many reasons to oppose the sales, hence the diversity of speakers. But the objective is clear: increase pressure on the government to heed the will of the majority of New Zealanders, who don't want to sell. What do we want? Clean, affordable, NZ-owned electricity, and no dodging the hard question of rights in water.
A new campaign to bring opposition to asset sales out in the open is to begin at the rally."
