Further drop in pokie numbers and spending
Figures released by the Department of Internal Affairs show that in the year ended 31 December 2012 the number of gaming machines in the country’s 1381 pubs and clubs decreased by 463 or just over 2.5 per cent from 18,133 to 17,670. There were 29 fewer gaming machine venues compared with a year earlier.
Gaming machine expenditure in the same period declined by 3.1 per cent or $27.1 million from $866.8 million to $839.7 million. Expenditure of $214.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2012 was $5.8 million less or 2.6 per cent on the same period of 2011 but $1.7 million or 0.8 per cent up on the third quarter of 2012.
The spending is captured through the Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) of non-casino gaming machines, which became fully operational in March 2007, enabling the Department to track and monitor operations, ensure the integrity of games and the accurate accounting of money.
