Port workers united against POAL sackings

Port workers are united against today’s sacking of nearly 300 workers at the Ports of Auckland, Rail and Maritime Transport Union Secretary Wayne Butson said today.

“The actions of POAL management show that they will stop at nothing in order to strip union members not only of their rights at work, but their right to a secure job in the first place.”

Wayne Butson said that casualisation and contracting out at the Ports would be bad for all Aucklanders.”

“Ports of Auckland management have run a systematic campaign against their own staff.”

“The Courts want to prevent us from doing all we can to show solidarity and support for the workers in Auckland, yet Ports of Auckland management are spreading this dispute to other ports around New Zealand without any consequences.”

“Aucklanders deserve better management of public assets than POAL has delivered, and better political leadership than Len Brown has displayed to date.”

Wayne Butson said that RMTU members would be supporting the Save our Port rally this weekend, to demand that the contracting out be reversed and the POAL jobs to be restored.
