More Kiwis Favour MMP Than Not
Kiwis clearly see MMP as part of the furniture. Poll results confirm that most New Zealanders favour our current
inclusive form of political representation.
The ONE News Colmar Brunton poll shows growing support for MMP, with 54 percent of New Zealanders favouring retention (up from 47 percent last year),
while only 36 percent want to drop it (down from 43 percent last year).
“New Zealand has used MMP for five elections and it continues to grow in popularity. The latest results show everyday
Kiwis see the system is fair, it works, and it really does reflect our nation’s diversity,” said Campaign for MMP
spokesperson Dr Philip Temple.
“What MMP has delivered is a genuinely representative Parliament. We’ve achieved better numbers of Maori, women and
ethnic minorities, truly earning the title House of Representatives.”
New Zealanders will decide the issue with a binding referendum in the 2011 general election.
“It is important for this referendum to be handled fairly”.
Dr Temple said: “We believe the Electoral Commission should be in charge of the process, and, following public
consultation, this independent body should decide the ballot questions and the information process.”
