Te Karere Appoints New Editor
Te Karere political correspondent Shane Taurima has been named as the new editor of the country’s leading Maori news
bulletin.
The appointment comes as the programme prepares to mark a quarter century on air and as it moves to a new 30 minute
format on February 2.
Taurima is a 13 year veteran of covering Maori news, starting in iwi radio thirteen years ago and joining Te Karere in
2006. He also presents TVNZ’s weekly Maori current affairs show, Marae, a role that he will continue in 2009.
TVNZ’s Head of News and Current Affairs Anthony Flannery and General Manager of Maori and Pacific Programmes Paora
Maxwell describe Taurima as one of a bright new generation of talented Maori broadcasters, saying he will bring a strong
fresh approach to Te Karere as it moves to a half hour format. That format will include several new elements including
more live reporting, studio interviews and weather in Te Reo.
Flannery and Maxwell also paid tribute to the many people who have contributed to the programme during its 25 years
history including Derek Fox, Whai Ngata, Hone Edwards, Tini Molyneux and the many other journalists who are now senior
members of the Maori broadcasting world. They also made a special tribute to outgoing Editor Te Karere Moari Stafford
who is leaving the programme after 21 years. “He has made an outstanding contribution to the continuity of the news
programme and he he will be sorely missed.” Stafford is staying with TVNZ and will move to Waka Huia.
Te Karere is broadcast three times a day on TV ONE, is also shown on TVNZ 7 and is available both on tvnz.co.nz and TVNZ
ondemand.
