Union Questions Warehouse Layoffs
Media Release from the National Distribution Union
December 10, 2008
The NDU says The Warehouse has let its workforce down by not consulting them before closing its Cellars business.
The company announced the closure, which could see up to 26 jobs disappear, earlier today. The closure follows the October shutdown of their grocery business which will result in 80 - 100 job losses.
"This is the second time in recent months that they have announced a decision to close without discussion." says NDU National Secretary Laila Harré.
"Workers are supposed to be given the opportunity to have input into decisions that could lead to job losses but The Warehouse seems to think it is ok to just write peoples' jobs off without listening to any ideas they might have on how to save them.
"We understand that hard decisions sometimes have to be made for commercial reasons but businesses also have a responsibility to do everything possible to avoid throwing people out of work."
