Call for National to Support Minimum Redundancy Law
The Service and Food Workers Union has called on National Party leader John Key to support Labour's minimum redundancy
law proposal as a means of providing security for those workers who fall victim to the financial crisis.
SFWU National Secretary John Ryall said that Labour's announcement of a law giving workers entitlement to minimum
redundancy compensation payments accompanied by a state-funded retraining allowance is a much better deal than the vague
National promises.
"The international financial crisis is going to affect thousands of New Zealand workers and yet if you look at the
National Party response it is to remove the right of workers in small workplaces to contest their dismissal within the
first 90 days and to weaken the right of union representatives to enter the workplace," said John Ryall.
"At the heart of the Labour policy is the strengthening of workers' rights whereas National is still locked in a world
of class hatred where the rights of workers takes second place to the short-term demands of their financial backers."
