Police are continuing their inquiries into the shooting of a woman in Whangärei's CBD yesterday.
Initial interviews with witnesses indicate that the woman committed a robbery when she entered the shop and some money was taken from the cash register.
A team of up to 30 staff are working on the inquiry.
The woman's body was removed overnight and Reyburn Street remains closed while the scene examination is completed.
A post mortem will take place in Auckland this morning.
With the holiday weekend beginning Police are conscious that the road needs to be opened soon, however a thorough investigation of the scene needs to be carried out.
There are a significant number of witnesses to speak to as the incident happened during the day in the CBD and a lot of people were in the area at the time.
Police would like to speak to witnesses that have not been contacted and anyone with information is asked to call the Whangärei Police Station on 09 430 4500.
The name of the woman is yet to be released as Police are contacting her immediate family who are overseas.
