Lotto’s Let Down
The buzz amongst service users in Downtown Community Ministry’s reception area matched the nation’s interest in last
Saturday night’s 30 million Lotto jackpot. People commented on the huge amount of prize money on offer and their
likelihood of winning the big prize. But some were also genuinely concerned about the hype of the draw luring them back
into the gambling habit they had freed themselves from. DCM Director Stephanie McIntyre says, “
The massive jackpot on offer last week enticed people to divert spending away from where they need it. “The promotion
and media coverage of Saturday’s draw was not surprising but when I heard that $77million was spent by people in the
three weeks leading up to the jackpot being struck I could only be dismayed. “
Lotto’s fancy packaging and huge promises try to convince people that near impossible rewards within reach. “It is
disappointing that a government owned body promotes such outrageous and flagrantly wasteful spending. “We don’t receive
any funds that are derived from the proceeds of gambling because we know the negative effects that gambling has had on
so many of our clients. “DCM wants to be able to support people to free from addictions and see them regain control over
their lives.”
