Treaty Policy To Be Released Tomorrow
This Wednesday 22 October at midday, in Christchurch's Cathedral Square, Rahui Katene will release the Treaty of Waitangi policy for the Maori Party.
“The Maori Party has a proud record in defending Maori rights in the House and this policy announcement will show voters how serious the Maori Party is about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the place we believe it should have in our society” said Mrs Katene.
“We felt Cathedral Square, and Christchurch, the oldest established city in New Zealand, was an ideal place to launch our policy on Te Tiriti o Waitangi” said Mrs Katene.
“Cathedral Square is a focal point for the city – bringing together the descendants represented in the plaques at Four Ships Court; with those who whakapapa back to Puari, the site of an important mahinga kai, and home for about 800 Waitaha people”.
“We believe this is a significant site to consider our Treaty relationships; and to launch our Treaty policy for Aotearoa” said Mrs Katene.
"Te Tiriti o Waitangi is of huge importance not only to the Maori Party, but to every New Zealander" said Mrs Katene. "Leadership on the Treaty, and the guarantee of indigenous rights, will establish our place as a nation on the international scene".
Mrs Katene will be joined by other Maori Party candidates, and the co-leaders of the Maori Party, in the Treaty policy launch.
