Costs Of Investigation Into Sexual Violation Complaints
New Zealand Police National News Release 2:03pm
13 October 2008
In the public interest and in response to a number of requests, Police have decided to make available the costs associated with the investigation into sexual violation complaints by Louise Nicholas and others involving former and current police officers.
Police National Crime Manager, Detective Superintendent Win Van der Velde, said while police normally do not have systems in place to accurately record costs of such cases, because of the unique nature of this case; it was set up with its own cost centre.
The cost recorded, between the time the investigation was established in February 2004 to 1 September 2008, is $4,641,780.
"This was a case that consumed many thousands of staff hours and from the start of the investigation in February 2004 to October 2006 some 99,527 hours were expended," said Mr Van der Velde.
"With the change of systems during the course of the investigation for recording hours from the Activity Management System (AMS) to the Peoplesoft system, which does not record "actual" hours per employee, we are not able to give the actual number of hours for the whole duration of the operation."
Mr Van der Velde pointed out that the bulk of the investigative work was carried out between February 2004 and October 2006.
