Helping children can pay off
If your organisation is focused on inspiring, elevating and enriching the lives of Kiwi kids – you could be eligible for
a grant from Save the Children New Zealand
Twice a year – in April and September – Save the Children New Zealand awards grants of up to $10,000 to local
initiatives that create lasting benefits for children.
"We're on the lookout for innovative ventures in which children can take an active role and generate positive change in
their community," says John Bowis, Executive Director of Save the Children New Zealand
"Projects need to focus on child participation, protection and/or poverty and, where appropriate, involve children in
their development and planning."
A recent successful applicant was the Christchurch Out-of-School Care and Recreation (OSCAR) Network which is
researching the special needs, medical conditions and disabilities of 5-13-year-olds who attend its programme.
Another was Help for Young People at Events and in their Gathering Spaces (HYPE-GS). This is a Nelson-based project
which is developing a travelling theatre show for local schools and youth groups to promote safety awareness at parties
and other events.
Successful projects are chosen by Save the Children New Zealand's Small Grants Fund committee made up of young people,
professionals and community workers all involved in child and youth development.
The committee will be looking to fund research, project development, start-up costs, training, resources, conferences
and meetings. Office equipment, on-going project costs, leisure activities, medical expenses, retrospective funding,
projects taking place off-shore and those undertaken by national and local government cannot be considered.
