Conservation Awards nomination deadline extended
The deadline has been extended for nominations for the annual Wellington Conservation Awards, being held this year on 12
November.
With the later timing of the event, previously held during Conservation Week, the organisers – the Department of
Conservation’s Wellington Conservancy and the Wellington Conservation Board - have extended the deadline for a month, to
Friday 5 September at 4pm.
“With plenty of lead-in time to this year’s event, we’re offering another opportunity for people to nominate groups and
individuals worthy of an award,” DOC’s Wellington Conservator Alan McKenzie said.
They include previous nominees who did not receive an award, but whose projects may now be more advanced.
“We’re keen to attract as wide a range as possible of nominations from the many community groups, organisations, and
individuals undertaking conservation projects through the Wellington region. We want to recognise the good work being
done by the community and inspire everyone to take care of their local environment,” Mr McKenzie said.
The awards have been designed to recognise sustained commitment by an organisation or individual to a project involving
voluntary effort and/or community involvement with a positive conservation outcome within the Wellington Conservancy.
Nominations are considered for people or businesses whose commitment to conservation goes above and beyond what is
normally found in their paid employment or business.
Examples of groups and individuals eligible for the awards include voluntary groups who restore reserves, hut wardens,
people who maintain tracks or public huts, those who care for wildlife on our coasts, and large or small volunteer
efforts in all aspects of conservation. Judges are also keen to hear about individuals or groups working on historic
heritage projects, and encourage nominations from schools or young people making a special effort.
