Public Services under threat from National’s tax cut plans
National List MP Mark Blumsky’s plan to write to public servants in Wellington to tell them their jobs would be safe
under a National government lacks credibility, says Labour Candidate for Wellington Central, Grant Robertson.
“What we know is that National is looking to the public service to help fund its tax cuts. They have said they want to
cut at least $500 million per annum from the public service. This is big money, and will not be found without cuts to
services and jobs”, Mr Robertson said.
National List MP Mark Blumsky has asked people to identify themselves as public servants in responding to a survey he
has sent to Wellington residents. He claims this is so he can send them information to tell them their jobs are safe.
“I have been contacted by people who were confused about the purpose of Mark’s question. His response will leave them
even more confused. Arguing that ‘natural attrition’ and removing ‘back office’ staff will pay for National’s policy
will not re-assure public servants”, Mr Robertson said.
“What happens if the Chief Social Worker leaves, or prison officers or ACC claims officers? Will these people not be
replaced? National’s policy does not make sense. “
“We know that so-called back office staff are vital to having high quality public services. Strong administrative,
technical and policy support is a key element in providing the quality of services the community needs and expects.
Labour has re-built these parts of the public service, and National seems intent on destroying them- again.”
“I am fully supportive of working to ensure we have the most efficient, innovative and flexible public services that we
can. This is best achieved by having well resourced and supported public servants, not by National’s policy that will
put services and jobs in peril.” Mr Robertson said.
