Fun Run Goes Bush To Reduce Climate Change
A series of unique events that combines fitness with native tree planting as a way of helping people to do their bit to
fight climate change gets underway in September.
Last year, more than 3,000 native trees were planted during the inaugural Hubbards Carbon Crusade series.
Event Director, Callum Anderson, said the series is all about giving people the chance to make a positive contribution
towards the fight against climate change.
“The Hubbards Carbon Crusade gives people the opportunity to walk or run 8.5km, 9.5km or 10km around an off-road course,
and plant four native trees in designated planting areas.”
Callum said the tree planting will take place on public land against the backdrop of spectacular scenery.
“Participants can visit the sites in later years and enjoy the fruits of their efforts.
“Research shows that most people are aware of climate change issues and are keen to address their individual
contribution to it. However, beyond recycling and turning lights off, many people simply aren’t aware of other practical
options available to them.”
Callum said this year’s Mini Hubbards Carbon Crusade which was held in Hamilton on World Environment Day, officially
launched the three part series.
“During that event, over 3,000 native trees were planted at Waiwhakareke in Hamilton.
“We’ve already had widespread industry support for the event with Hubbard Foods signing on again as principal sponsor.
“Hubbards is a leader in business social responsibility and the Carbon Crusade meshes well with a number of the
organisation’s core values including caring for the environment and supporting active lifestyles.”
Other organisations supporting the Carbon Crusade include Suzuki, MoreFM, Icebreaker and Auckland Airport.
The Auckland event will take place on 7 September at Puhinui Reserve. The Hamilton event will be held opposite Hamilton
Zoo with the planting site at Lake Rotokauri on 14 September, while the Christchurch Hubbards Carbon Crusade will be at
Bottle Lake Forest on 20 September.
