Bye Bye Gov
Republic of New Zealand Party Leader, Kerry Bevin said he was amused by the Governor General’s new flag.
“Bye Bye Gov.”
When support for a New Zealand Republic is growing, Kiwis certainly don’t need another medieval mockery waving over us.
The Union Jack needs to come off our flag. We are not colonials. And we certainly don’t need a Clayton’s Republic,
said the Auckland Central candidate.
Mr Bevin said Kiwi snoozers need to step boldly into the new millennium to claim a mature identity, and empower
ourselves to manage our own affairs completely down under. Australians intend to, he added
Mr Bevin said there was no need for a Head of State. Under a modern democratic republican system, people elect the
Prime Minister or President Nobody is born into this responsibility.
“Jerking your forelock to an appointee of the Queen is just not appropriate anymore.”
Any leading citizen can award New Zealand honours. Unconstitutional acts can be called to account by any citizen in the
Supreme Court.
“We need to move forward to 2040.”
Republic of New Zealand Party policy is to dispense with the Monarchy and the Governor General, Mr Bevin said
“We want to establish a Republican model of government where there is separation of powers between the legislature,
executive and judiciary.”
He added that all citizens would be regarded as equal before the law and would be accountable to the Constitution before
the Supreme Court.
“We’ll invite the public to express their views on what should be in our constitution.”
The Prime Minister or President will be elected by popular vote. The Party will ask Kiwis if they want our de facto
flag, the black background and silver fern, as our national flag.
“We’ll have a Binding National Referendum and if the yes vote reaches the threshold it will be binding, “he said.
