NCWNZ Applauds and Supports Women’s Refuge Annual Campaign
The launch of the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuge Annual Appeal campaign leaves little doubt that domestic violence in New Zealand is violating a person’s human rights says National Council of Women of New Zealand (NCWNZ).
“The campaign cuts across all socio-economic, cultural and ethnic groups making it very clear that domestic violence is all around us. As a nation, we can no longer continue to turn a blind eye, we all have to work urgently to stop this ugly dark side of our communities,” says NCWNZ National President, Christine Low.
Last year, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Committee expressed concern regarding the level of family violence in New Zealand.
The issue of domestic violence is not new nor is it isolated to just New Zealand. In 1995, Senator Hilary Clinton said the following: “It is a violation of human rights when a leading cause of death worldwide among women ages 14 to 44 is the violence they are subjected to in their own homes.”
“This annual campaign comes at a time when the subject of domestic violence has featured heavily in the media in recent weeks. We expect the campaign will further reinforce the belief that domestic violence is not acceptable in any circumstances in our society,” concluded Christine Low.
