Grey Power calls for Electricity Com disbandment
Grey Power President calls for disbandment of
Electricity Commission.
The President of Grey Power New Zealand is very unhappy with the facts revealed in a Sunday Star Times Report of 20th of July.
In the Presidents opinion the Electricity Commission is not representing the biggest number of consumers who make up the domestic group of electricity users and that domestic group is subsidizing the bigger users and commercial users.
The Government is naturally staying “mum” on the issue because of the huge windfall in dividends including GST.
The Generation capacity is rising but the price to domestic users is rising at a much higher rate than for other user groups.
The Electricity Commission is supposed to be a regulator not a tax gatherer.
This is an unholy alliance with little representation by domestic users.
The President of Grey Power is calling for this Commission to be disbanded and that domestic users are represented by DEUN (Domestic Energy Users Network). The other bigger users do not need a Commission to hide behind.
DEUN consists of representatives from Grey Power, Royal New Zealand RSA, Rural Women NZ, Age Concern, Public Health Association, Child Poverty Action Group and therefore has widespread membership without vested interest in money making schemes for business or Central Government and only wishes to ensure domestic consumers pay their fair share only.
Central Government have put subsidies in place for Local Body Rating and if the Power issue is not addressed then similar subsidies will have to follow for low income power users as the Energy Abatement lift in threshold from 8,000 units to 9,000 units is minimal.
