Amazing Response To Plea For Male Mentors
As a result of national media coverage last week, seeking male mentors for Foundation for Youth Development’s flagship programme Project K, over 100 inquiries were received from the public.
Project K is targeted at Year 10 students (4th form) and aims to maximise youth potential through a 14 month programme which involves a Wilderness Adventure, Community Challenge and 12 months of mentoring.
Project K National Programme Manager Lani French says “We need over 300 mentors each year and approximately 150 need to be men. While there are always plenty of women up for the challenge we find it harder to recruit men, particularly in some of our more provincial areas where the pool of mentors is quite small.
“There is the misconception that the mentoring phase involves counseling students when in fact it’s more about participating in fun activities together and offering the student guidance and support with their goals.”
“The response from the public has been overwhelming and we now have a significant number of men signed up to our next mentor trainings which is fantastic news.”
Project K still have plenty of mentor places to fill across the country and encourage anyone interested in becoming a mentor to phone 0800 HELP PK (0800 435 775).
