NOMINATE YOUR CANDIDATE!
MEDIA RELEASE: 2 July 2008
"Nominate your candidate for New Zealand's first elected head of State - the President of New Zealand is now online!" announced Lewis Holden, chair of the Republican Movement of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The Republican Movement has launched an unofficial website for the President of New Zealand at www.president.org.nz to show New Zealanders are more than capable of electing a head of State of their own.
"The Royal Family have shown they are unable to do the job of head of State for New Zealand. In the past when polls have asked New Zealanders to recommend a New Zealand head of State, Sir Ed Hillary always came out as the ideal candidate. With Sir Ed's passing we look to the other New Zealanders with the right skills for the job" continued Mr Holden.
Nominations for candidates worthy of being our head of State are open now, and will be followed by a knock-out electoral process until New Zealand's first elected head of State is found. The website also features an online survey on specific issues such as the name of the head of state, their term in office and methods of electing them.
"2008 is an election year. New Zealanders will get the chance to elect their representatives, a fundamental right in any democracy. The Republican Movement believes it is time we were able to choose our own head of State - and this website will show that New Zealanders are more than capable of doing so" concluded Mr Holden.
