Emissions report a Mickey Mouse comic

Emissions report a Mickey Mouse comic from Wellington beltway conspiracy
“A Mickey Mouse comic cooked up in haste by a Wellington beltway conspiracy to save face for a government facing embarrassment of the loss of its shonky emissions trading bill,” is how the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition describes a report issued yesterday by the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development (NZBCSD). Coalition chairman Rear Admiral Jack Welch said the report was unacceptable for several reasons:
• It was cobbled together in just two weeks, producing monetary figure claims that do not stand close analysis.
• It has already been challenged by members of the NZBCSD.
• It was substantially financed by two government owned energy companies, Mighty River and Meridian, both of whom stand to reap windfall profits from emissions trading.
• The obvious motive for such unseemly haste is that its primary objective was to influence those MPs who are wavering in their support of the ETS Bill. It compares poorly with recent, well researched, reports from the New Zealand Institute, Business New Zealand and the New Zealand Institute for Economic Research.
• It is transparently political in its intent.
“It’s well past time that New Zealanders woke up to the fact that they are being conned by a government wedded to a climate change ideology that is not supported by valid verifiable scientific evidence, or by real world observations of climate trends, ‘ said Rear Admiral Welch. “This ETS Bill is based on a belief that emissions of carbon dioxide will cause catastrophic human caused global warming. The only grounds for such a belief come from opinions of 56 government-appointed authors of Chapter 9 of the Fourth Assessment Report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), ‘sexed up’ by those who were responsible for writing the Summary for Policy Makers. Their conclusions are no more than opinions and have been challenged by thousands of climate scientists around the world.
“It’s not enough our government repeats ad nauseam the misleading claim that the IPCC report is the work of 2500 scientists worldwide; it’s not enough that the government ignores conflicting scientific evidence and trashes well researched and peer reviewed papers; now, to prop up a shaky government bill, we are presented with a makeshift report hatched up by a former Labour MP and Minister, and, it seems, paid for by two State-owned companies who stand to gain windfall profits of multi-millions of dollars from the pockets of their consumers if the ETS proceeds.
“New Zealanders can smell a political rort when it is foisted on them, and this is a rort too far, “declared Rear Admiral Welch.
“But the greatest rort of all is that this raid of the purses of ordinary New Zealanders is based on pseudo-science that our government has swallowed, hook line and sinker. There are thousands of scientists around the world who challenge the notion that carbon dioxide is the cause of the modest warming that commenced in 1976 and ended in 2002 when a steady downward trend commenced. There is a wealth of hard evidence that variations in climate, both warming and cooling are mostly driven by natural phenomena. In spite of that, our government listens only to the opinions of a few government scientists and bureaucrats in other countries, who cannot face the embarrassment of telling the government that their pet computer models, like the legendary emperor, have no clothes..
“We appeal to New Zealand First, the Maori Party, United Future and all MPs that are able to think for themselves put this emissions trading fiasco into cold storage and to call for a thorough independent review of the science claimed to support man-made warming,” said Rear Admiral Welch.
