Opportunities aplenty for Sealord workers
Sealord workers made redundant recently are in hot demand, Nelson Regional Commissioner of Social Development, Janine
Dowding said today.
"Everyday Work and Income receives calls from employers nationwide offering jobs and training for affected workers," Mrs
Dowding said.
"These range from work in health care and forestry, to work for tradesmen, such as mechanical fitters, qualified
welders, fitter welders, electricians and instrument fitters.
"One business that makes CNG gas station equipment is willing to accept people who have worked in a related industry
with at least 5 years experience. In addition Work and Income has received general requests that McDonalds needs 50
staff, Burger King has announced it is opening a new outlet and a Nelson engineering company that has 26 opportunities
still has eight vacancies left," she said.
Currently there are about 100 jobs listed with Work and Income across the region, which includes Nelson, Marlborough and
the West Coast. These vacancies are mainly in the processing, care giving, vineyard, social services, labouring and
hospitality sectors.
"We will be on site at Sealord over the coming weeks to help affected workers with information and resources about job
opportunities and income support.
"Work and Income has services such as Transition to Work to help with the costs of moving to a new job; and the Skills
Investment Subsidy that helps a job seeker by making a temporary contribution to their wages and training so they can
get a new job.
"We also have Industry Partnerships that can help retrain workers to fill skills shortages.
"Work and Income will continue to work closely with affected staff, Sealord, and the Service and Food Workers Union to
make sure everyone is getting the support they need," she said.
