Negative publicity hurting Myanmar’s victims
Negative press about the obstacles of getting aid to the victims of Myanmar’s cyclone, is hurting the cause, said TEAR
Fund executive director Stephen Tollestrup.
“We are hearing stories of the Junta withholding good-quality foreign aid for itself and handing out rotten food, and of
aid not reaching the victims.
“While this may be true, there are NGOS in the country like TEAR Fund’s partner who are sourcing aid from within the
country and providing assistance under very trying circumstances.
“Highlighting the difficulties of working with the Junta is undermining public confidence and causing people to hold
back from donating to Myanmar appeals,” he said.
“This will only hurt the victims more by reducing funding for emergency and long-term rehabilitation of the country.”
Mr Tollestrup said Kiwis can be assured that their donations are making a difference and they can have the confidence in
TEAR Fund’s partner and other NGOS working in Myanmar.
