Focus firmly on Myanmar despite China earthquake
While TEAR Fund NZ has empathy concerning the earthquake in China that has killed an estimated 10,000 people and left many more thousands injured, it has no plans to launch an appeal.
“We believe the Chinese have the capacity to deal with this disaster and we need to keep our focus firmly on Myanmar where the government is struggling to deal with the situation,” said TEAR Fund executive director Stephen Tollestrup.
“We have grave fears that an outbreak of disease in Myanmar will bring further casualties as those, especially in outlying areas, wait for food and aid in significant volumes to meet the needs there.”
Mr Tollestrup said: “We are keeping updated on the situation through our partners in China, and pray that rescuers can speedily and effectively meet the needs of those affected by the disaster.”
