Climate contradiction:
Will Govt please explain?
In the wake of its backdown on the Emission Trading Scheme Bill, the Government has been asked by Terry Dunleavy, secretary of the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition, to explain what he describes as “a glaring contradiction.”
“Everyone from the UN IPCC down to NIWA have been telling us of the continuing increase in the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, the one self-evident fact in this climate change/emissions debate on which there is total agreement,” says Dunleavy.
“Then IPCC, NIWA et al claim that this increase in this minor greenhouse gas will cause what they describe as catastrophic global warming. They blame it all on the very small amount of CO2 derived from human sources, as distinct from natural sources such as volcanoes, oceans, etc. Because of that, we emitting humans should have to pay for the right to continue our emissions in the hope that the extra costs will make us emit less. Hence the ETS Bill.
“But it hasn’t been warming since the El Nino spike of 1998, and now many of these same doom-casting scientists are telling us that ‘global warming’ has stopped, at least until 2015.
“How can that be? If CO2 levels continue to rise, but the world fails to warm as IPCC’s computer models have told us in four consecutive assessment reports, the last in 2007, even a simple layperson can deduce that CO2 cannot be the cause.
“If man-made CO2 is not causing warming, why are we proposing to penalise people for emitting it, and why aren’t we using our huge reserves of coal to generate the electricity we need so desperately,” asks Dunleavy.
“What’s needed in New Zealand is a political leader with the guts to challenge the pseudo-science being peddled by the Greens and government functionaries desperate to maintain the flow of research funding.
“In 1999, we had similar Greens hysteria about genetic modification, which was resolved only by the creation of a Royal Commission to investigate the evidence. That’s what we need now, on climate science, and news that there will be no warming until at least 2015 means we have the luxury if the time to do it.
“If the Government can’t give us an adequate explanation of the contradiction between higher levels of CO2 and no warming, it should shelve the ETS Bill and establish a Royal Commission without further delay,” said Dunleavy.
