PRESS STATEMENT FOR RELEASE
Family Party continues support towards petition
30 April 2008. The Family Party says it will push further into South Auckland to assist the petition towards its target.
Family Party leader Richard Lewis says the party collected over a thousand signatures in a day in Manukau and over two thousand over two weekends in Mangere, meaning there is plenty of enthusiasm amongst South Auckland parents who want to see the law corrected.
“I think the current achievement of over 260,000 signatures is a commendable collective effort involving many New Zealanders nationwide. It is a mandate in its own right to fix the ill-conceived anti-smacking law and give good parents peace of mind when it comes to child discipline,” says Mr Lewis.
The Family Party stands strongly against child abuse but aims to reinstate Section 59 of the Crimes Act to afford parental protection in circumstances where discipline is reasonable.
