Update On Stolen Gallantry Medals
The gallantry medals stolen from the Waiouru Army Museum will be returned to the museum and go back on public display,
says Deputy Chief of Army Brigadier Phil Gibbons.
Brigadier Gibbons said the medals remained with the police for forensic testing and the museum and New Zealand Army were
working with security experts to ensure the medals could go back on public display in an enhanced security environment.
“I’m happy for the medals to remain with the police for as long as needed if it means a vital piece of evidence can be
secured to catch those who stole them,” Brigadier Gibbons said.
“Once the police have finished their investigation the medals will be returned to their rightful home at the Waiouru
Army Museum.
“We have always said the original medals will go back on display because New Zealanders have the right to see such an
important part of their history. The medals were awarded for extraordinary valour. They symbolise the huge sacrifices
that all New Zealanders made in the many conflicts that we recognise on Anzac Day,” Brigadier Gibbons said.
