ALAC’s Impaired Vision
Fresh criticism of the latest advertisements from The Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand (ALAC) came today from the
Republic Party of New Zealand.
Hans Laven, spokesman for Social Development, claimed that the advertisements spread anti-male sexism by portraying only
male drinkers as violent or harmful to others, while portraying female drinkers only as victims of male offending.
“Drunk women frequently harm others through violence, abuse, neglect, clumsiness and impaired driving, yet the
advertisements give the impression that only men when drunk might harm others while women will only be victims. They
portray men only as violent and as sexual predators, thereby insulting the vast majority of men who would protect a
vulnerable person.”
At his Tauranga electorate today Mr Laven commended ALAC for its efforts to bring home to people the dangers of
excessive drinking, and he was not bothered by the shock impact of the advertisements. However, he urged ALAC to portray
the dangers honestly and to avoid adding to anti-male propaganda he claimed was now widespread in society.
The Republic of NZ Party stands on a range of policies including social equality for men, based on a belief that men’s
contribution, needs and rights are being largely ignored by government and in the Family Court.
