MEDIA ADVISORY: MARCH 24TH 2008
From Save Happy Valley Wellington
Protesters 'Walking the walk' for climate change and Happy Valley arrive in Wellington this week.
Members of the Save Happy Valley Coalition (SHVC) have been walking in protest from Auckland city all the way to a
proposed mine site and the SHVC occupation camp in Happy Valley, near Westport, for the 'Walk the Walk' campaign.
On January 28th 2008, the two year anniversary of the occupation at Happy Valley, walkers from Auckland began their trek
across the country to raise awareness of the impending destruction of Happy Valley for the proposed state-owned Cypress
opencast coalmine and the resulting carbon emissions, death of endangered species and pollution that will ensue.
Having walked for over 8 weeks now, Walk the Walk organisers will arrive in Upper Hutt this Tuesday March 25th. They
will be visiting schools along the way and meeting in Petone at 12 noon on March 26th with State-Owned Enterprise and
Environment Minister, Trevor Mallard, at his Jackson Street office. The walkers then march to Wellington on the 27th and
set up a Climate Camp on Parliament grounds for the weekend, before crossing the Cook Strait to continue their walk.
A meeting and dinner has been arranged by the Wellington SHVC group for the walkers and anyone interested in saving
Happy Valley. Please come to 128 Abel Smith Street, Te Aro on Thursday March 27th at 6:30pm. Koha welcomed.
