Student Leaders Encouraged to Own their World at the
2008 National Young Leaders’ Days
Double amputee adventurer Mark Inglis has joined a number of other high profile speakers who will be encouraging and
inspiring New Zealand’s next generation of leaders at the 2008 National Young Leaders’ Days which take place around the
country from March 10.
Run by the Halogen Foundation, the National Young Leaders’ Days are designed to develop student leadership in schools
and build a better future for young people.
Annette Fale, general manager of the Halogen Foundation and recipient of a 2007 Sir Peter Blake Emerging Leader Award in
recognition of her commitment to fostering leadership among youth, said this year’s theme “Own Your World” will
challenge students to accept that they are never too young to play their part and no action in life is insignificant.
“The leadership days will remind them that team work is important, because results and achievements aren’t usually the
work of one alone, yet they’ll come to understand the important role we play as individuals in that team,” she said. “As
leaders we can’t always be responsible for what others do, but we can be responsible for ourselves and our own
decisions.”
The National Young Leaders’ Days have become one of the most significant student leadership events in New Zealand and
since 2001 more than 50,000 students have directly benefited through attending one of the events.
The day is both practical and inspirational and empowers students with skills to balance study, school commitments and
their social life and to manage the stress in these areas. It is also a great opportunity for students to connect with
students from other schools and develop long term support networks.
The day consists of three sessions with each consisting of one or two speakers, question times, short videos, learning
exercises, student involvement, music, student interaction and practical application.
“There is a strong sense of the baton being passed as current New Zealand leaders impart their wisdom and knowledge to
an emerging generation of future leaders,” said Mrs Fale.
“Feedback from teachers and schools has indicated that giving participants the chance to draw on the experience and
advice of high profile leaders inspires them to serve their fellow students, school or community.”
Any student showing potential leadership skills within the school is invited to attend the event, and there is no limit
to the number of students a school can send.
Tickets cost $42.00 per student (early bird rate of $39.00 per student until 28 Feb for Secondary School events and 20
March for Primary and Intermediate) and $15.00 for each staff member or parent. Schools can register online at
