Resolution nearer on funding of TVNZ Māori programmes
The Minister of Māori Affairs and the Minister of Broadcasting met today with Te Māngai Pāho and TVNZ to discuss funding of the core TVNZ Māori programmes, Waka Huia, Te Karere and Marae.
The Chief Executive of Te Māngai Pāho, John Bishara, said that today’s meeting was fruitful and provided an opportunity for all parties to outline their respective positions.
“The meeting was useful in helping to map out the way forward and it appears likely that the outstanding matters can be resolved,” said Mr Bishara.
“TMP values highly the core programmes produced by the Māori department at TVNZ which has a proud tradition and loyal audience. Discussions will continue on the funding formula for the current year, and going forward, to address the concerns of TVNZ and to ensure that TMP, Maori and indeed all New Zealanders receive value for the funding.”
Mr Bishara said TMP will continue to advocate strongly for improved timeslots for these programmes.
“Access to these programmes by as many people as possible is our aim to ensure the best promotion of te reo Māori. These programmes also provide an excellent vehicle to ensure that Māori issues are better understood by all New Zealanders.”
“I acknowledge that there has been interest in this matter which may have created a level of uncertainty at TVNZ and we thank all those staff involved in Māori programming at TVNZ for their patience while we work towards a durable solution.”
