ACC Concerned about Unrestrained Children in Cars
Recent media stories about unrestrained children in cars have prompted ACC to remind people about the devastating
consequences that can occur if a child is thrown around inside a moving vehicle.
“Children who aren’t restrained properly in cars can die and that’s a tragedy. The really sad thing is that it’s
completely unnecessary since it only takes a second to click on a seatbelt”, said Jennifer Brown, Manager Public Safety
Programmes, ACC.
“Correctly used child restraints can reduce fatality risk by an estimated 71% and serious injury by 67%.”
“Of course the vast majority of parents do the right thing, and that’s great. But to the others our message is simple;
always buckle your kids in properly”.
It is important to ensure that the correct restraint is being used and that it is installed properly. Putting a child in
a wrongly installed restraint is like strapping a torpedo to their back in a car crash.

ACC supported initiative designed to help ensure the correct use of child restraints. The site also allows people to
find a free, qualified technician in their area who can advise on proper restraints.
