Marina decision disappointing
The Hauraki Maori Trustboard says it is disappointed that the Government has reversed its decision and approved consent
for the proposed Whangamata marina.
Trustboard Chairman Toko Renata said the iwi of Hauraki had been strongly opposed to this particular development because
it would destroy an ecologically sensitive salt marsh and a traditional kaimoana (seafood) gathering bed.
“We said in March when Chris Carter made his initial decision that we felt it was the correct decision,” Mr Renata said.
“It is disappointing to see that decision now reversed.
“We have always maintained that the proposed marina was in the wrong place,” he said.
The Hauraki Maori Trustboard will now take some time to consider the matter before making any further comment.
Mr Renata said that he wanted to remind people that the iwi of Hauraki are not anti business or anti development on the
Coromandel.
“We have consistently advocated for a carefully considered and planned approach to development on the Coromandel
Peninsula and will continue to do so.
Toko Renata said resolving outstanding treaty claims and addressing management of sensitive areas like Whangamata
Harbour would increase certainty for all residents on the Coromandel.
