Public warned to not shortchange a needy animal!
Christmas shoppers are being warned that attempts to outsmart a fox, outrun a cheetah, tame a lion or placate a raging bull will prove impossible unless armed with a donation for a collection bucket. Organisers say their 1000-strong menagerie is highly trained in the art of detection of loose change and the smell of valuable dollar notes!
A menagerie of cheerful lions, bears, monkeys, cows and even a wandering albatross will be released onto busy streets in 28 cities and towns throughout New Zealand this week to capture the love, affection and funds of Christmas shoppers. The two-legged furry contingent is collecting funds for national animal advocacy organisation SAFE and their work against animal cruelty.
SAFE appeal spokesperson Hans Kriek said today: “We can assure New Zealanders that our free-ranging menagerie are friendly and will do no harm provided they are rewarded with lots of love and affection. It’s what all animals deserve.”
“If you see a feisty lioness on your way to work she may have her sights on you. She’ll be after your wallet in no time! To avoid having a neglected, frustrated bear or battery hen chasing you down the street it might be easier to give a donation! Even the reindeer are willing to trade a handstand or leg balance for a buck. These animals mean business!”
“This street appeal is SAFE’s only opportunity to raise funds nationally from the public. We hope to raise $200,000 to ensure that we can continue our work to help abused animals in New Zealand throughout 2007. We encourage New Zealanders to give generously,” says Mr Kriek.\
