This Saturday, the Chinese Liberal Culture Movement will hold the Chinese Human Rights Awards 2006 in Auckland, an event that couldn’t be held in China for fear of the implications to the organisers.
In a country where citizens’ rights are limited, Saturday’s event is designed to honour the work of human and democratic rights activists in China who continue to challenge this.
Yang Lui, from the New Zealand chapter of the Chinese Liberal Culture Movement, which is sponsoring the event, says this is an important opportunity to highlight the work of the Chinese human rights and democratic activists.
“We are all patriotic Chinese however we are concerned that the Chinese government fails to adhere to international human rights standards,” says Mr Lui.
Internationally acclaimed human rights activist, Mr Hong Bing is to be honoured at the event.
“Although the world is willing to engage with Chinese on an economic front, it is important that pressure is continually put on the Chinese government to initiate change in human rights for its people.
“There is great personal risk for me because of my involvement in this event, however I believe it is imperative we continue to fight against the human rights injustices in China,” says Mr Lui.
It is hoped this event will raise the profile of this issue and inspire members to continue their work.
