There is high risk to your security in Suva and an increasing risk in Fiji. We recommend against non-essential travel to
Fiji at this time.
On 5 December the Commander of the Fiji Military Forces announced that he had taken over executive authority, declared
himself the President of the Republic of Fiji, and said he had dismissed the elected Prime Minister and other Cabinet
Ministers. The Prime Minister has not resigned, but is reported to have been removed from Suva by the military. The
military has effective control of Suva and military checkpoints are in place, including in Nadi and Nausori.
The security situation could deteriorate further. New Zealanders in Fiji should avoid areas of military activity,
including military installations. You should stay away from any demonstrations or large gatherings, as these could
result in violence. You should monitor local media, or ask your hotel or tour operator for any information regarding
restrictions on movement.
Airports remain open and flights are operating normally.
On 26 November, the New Zealand Government moved High Commission dependents out of Suva in response to a specific
security concern. Given the uncertain security situation, they have yet to return. The voluntary departure of dependents
of New Zealand High Commission staff from Fiji has been authorised.
We recommend you monitor the media and this website, ensure you have appropriate insurance cover and that your travel
documents are easily accessible.
This advice will be kept under review. A further escalation of the situation could result in a warning to avoid all
travel to Fiji.
